Currently involved in breed judging (B list NSDTR Club, opened CCR and CR, permission to judge any breeds at open level), RO judge all levels; active competitor in RO, obedience, agility, WT, HTM; showing Tollers all over Europe; working Tollers on shoots in the UK; official UK KC photographer.

From my early childhood I was dreaming about having a dog, but due to our family circumstances and constant tavelling, it was pretty impossible. We settled and got a family dog, a Papillon, 13 years ago. 2 years later I have started working with dogs, first as a photographer and then as an apprentice dog trainer in a famous dog training school in London, UK. Back then I was working a lot with rescue dogs focusing on obedience and agility as well as behavioural issues, in 2009 I got my first rescue Collie cross who taught me a lot about patience and showed me what the unconditional love is.

In 2011 I got my first show dog, a Toller. Thats how my passion for showing started, and no, Dingo wasn’t a very successful show dog back home in the UK, but he was a star in the show rings on the continent, a champion of 5 countries, Slovenian first champion and grand champion Toller. On top of showing, Dingo successfully competed in Obedience, Agility, Heelwork to Music and Rally, achieving the very top rally title within 18 months of competing. He is also a brilliant working dog, who is picking up ducks, pheasants and partridge during the shooting season on 3 estates in the UK. In 2014 Cooper, Dingo’s son, joined our extended family, he lives with my parents in Slovenia, enjoying a life of a perfect family dog. Cooper’s love of water brought us to the dock diving sport. In 2016 we lost our rescue Collie and gained another crazy son of Dingo’s, Tring. He has shown interest in birds and dummies since early puppyhood, and together with his successful show career he is enjoying being a proper Gundog. To this day he is the only Toller in the UK to achieve Show Working Gundog Certificate and subsequently all the Working Certificates available for Retrievers under the KC rules. With a massive support from the NSDTR Club of UK I have started my judging education in 2016, judged Tollers for the first time in February 2017, since then I have judged over 70 Tollers and a number of other breeds in Gundog Group. I immensely enjoy going over dogs and watching them move, it is a completely different perspective to seeing dogs in their every day life, despite both being equally important, making a judging decision in the ring is hopefully making a difference for breeds future.

Although we have had dogs since my childhood, I got my first labrador, Fisherman's Fellow Beaver, after long waiting in 2006. He introduced me to the world of retriever sports - working tests and field trials.

I have achieved great success with my second labrador, Brookbank Bee, who has become an international field trial champion. I currently have two labradors at home with whom I enjoy hunting and competing.

Besides competing I regularly take part in organizing and coordinating working tests and field trials, furthermore I also judge at competitions because I would like to put something back to the sport which gave me so much.

I am honored to be invited to judge in this event. I wish you all good luck!

First and foremost, I would like to express my thanks for the invitation to judge in Slovenia, it is a real honor!

I am a research scientist by profession, and I fell in love with the idea of keeping and training working retrievers about 16 years ago when a young colleague came to study in our research facility in Budapest for a few weeks. As it turned out, he had three Golden Retrievers whom he partly trained himself, and with whom he regularly attended working tests. As he kept talking about this topic, I felt mesmerized by the concept of a “working retriever“ and by the techniques he used to train and to build a unique working relationship with such a dog! I decided that by expanding our family as well as my personal “research” in this direction, I must try this myself!

So, following some theoretical preparation by reading tons of books and watching DVDs on the subject, as well as attending working tests as a spectator, we finally purchased our first dog, Joker, a Golden Retriever with whom I started training actively. Joker was followed by two other Goldens, first Scotch whom we brought from Scotland, and then Guru, sired by Scotch. Especially with Guru we had some great successes in the open class and attended a huge number of competitions both in Hungary and internationally. Before his retirement in 2017 due to an injury, Guru was widely regarded as the most successful working Golden Retriever in Hungary in recent years. In addition, with Guru we also participated in the K-99 system of certification which required a somewhat different kind of training, where he achieved the highest (9th) level in the obedience class. Moreover, he also became a member of the prestigious team of “fMRI-dogs” comprised of the few dogs who could be trained to lie motionless in the fMRI machine as a part of an internationally acclaimed research project on canine cognition conducted at the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest. The latest member of our dog-family is Prof, a very young fox-red Labrador Retriever who is still only emerging from puppyhood.

Building on these experiences, after obtaining the FCI judge’s certificate, lately I have started judging in various events both in Hungary and abroad.

Originally I thought that learning the techniques of dog training would be relatively easy as compared to quantum physics. I was wrong! Now I know that to be a good trainer requires not only a lot of technical experience and knowledge, but a set of special human skills such as intuition, calmness, flexibility, tolerating failure, dedication, a sharp eye for reading dogs with very different temperaments, but most importantly humility. Similarly, I have come to admire the fantastic retrievers with the right physical and mental abilities, the ones who possess the delicate combination of zeal and calmness, creativity and obedience, independence and strong bonding to their handler. As a result, over the years I developed a huge respect for the outstanding trainers and handlers that we have in Hungary and those I got to know abroad, as well as for the outstanding retrievers. Of course, the real magic is in the teamwork of a skilled handler and a skilled dog. I hope to see this magic occurring over and over again in Slovenia!
